Following recent incidents workers’ committees to boycott Turkey

A survey of workers' committees carried out in recent days has revealed that the majority of the main workers’ committees are once again planning to boycott holidays to Turkey, this in light of the broadcast of a fictional television program portraying Israeli soldiers murdering Palestinian children and of the cancellation of joint military exercises.

A comprehensive survey conducted by the main workers’ committees, coordinators of social and economic activities for workers’ committees in Israel, indicated that the recent sequence of events that have affected the previous close ties between Turkey and Israel, have influenced most of the large unions, who now intend to stop sending their employees for holidays to Turkey.

The harsh rebuke from Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan, against Israel’s actions during the military operation in Gaza at the beginning of 2009, led to Israelis boycotting Turkey, something that still evident today.  Since that period Israeli traffic to Turkey has indeed recovered and it remains the leading destination for Israeli travelers. However the annual figures to date show a sharp decline in the number of visitors compared to 2008.

Yakov Alush, Managing director of the Vaadim Company, announced that while it appeared that relations between the Israeli unions and the Turks had returned to normal; following the most recent developments, the heads of the workers’ committees have decided to renew their boycott against Turkey, but this time more aggressively.  “The unions are even calling on expanding it to other fields,” revealed Alush.

The survey showed that among those committees wanting to boycott Turkey are the Israel Electric Company, Israel Military Industries, Tnuva, Tadiran, Rafael, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labour, Egged, Bezeq, First National Bank of Israel, Oil Refineries Ltd, Volcani, the Agricultural Research Organization, El Al, ECI, Shikun & Binui, the Meir Medical Centre, Haifa Port, The Technion and others.
