British Airways to charge commission on advanced seat reservations

From 7th October, British Airways will begin charging its customers a fee for making advanced seat reservations; the amount will range from $16 to $80.  Yael Katan: “The option to reserve a seat free of charge 24 hours prior to departure still exists.”

British Airways is to charge its economy class passengers traveling within Europe $16 per travel segment to reserve a seat and up to $32 per segment on long distance flights, while reserving a bulkhead seat will cost up to $80 per segment.

Business class passengers will be charged even more, on flights within Europe the fee will be $32 and on long distance flights up to $96 per segment. Until now passengers were able to reserve seats only up to 24 hours prior to departure, they will now be able to reserve seats well in advance, based on the above fees.

British Airways said that the aim of this move was to maximize its passenger revenue.  Yael Katan, commercial manager of British Airways in Israel said that until today British Airways had not allowed seats to be reserved in advance in any cabin, including business class, more than 24 hours before the flight departure.

According to Katan, from 7th October British Airways will allow seat reservations in all cabin classes for the additional fee, but if the option is not taken then it will be possible to reserve seats free of charge from 24 hours prior to flight departure.

“It should be noted that our frequent flyer passengers will continue to receive this service for free and can reserve seats in all classes at the time of making the reservation,” added Katan.
