The Histadrut Labor Federation announced a work dispute with El Al following claims that El Al violated the conditions of the agreement signed at the end of 2008 and the failure of management to increase efficiency. El Al: “The management is convinced that the workers committee understands very well that the declaration of a labor dispute serves no purpose.”
According to the Histadrut Labor federation, a work dispute at El Al was proclaimed following unilateral changes made by the management to the working conditions of the employees, such as changes in working conditions, cancellation and reduction of employee benefits, many employees forced to contribute to the cost of meals, reduction in replenishing pay and the payment of taxes on air tickets.
Avi Edri, chairman of the transport workers union at the Histadrut explained that the El Al management forced the delegation of the workers committee to announce a labor dispute. “The burden of responsibility for now has been placed on the shoulders of El Al’s management and we are turning to the management to freeze the one sided steps and to enter into negotiations with the workers’ representatives.”
The chairman of the El Al workers committee, Yossi Levy commented that at a time when the company was suffering; it was not the time to employ senior workers on huge personal contracts while at the same time demanding greater efficiency from the rest of the workforce.
El Al CEO, Haim Romano said that the company had no intention of touching the salaries of the employees, but to the benefits accompanying the salaries. “On each percent of the workers efficiency. management would immediately be more than twice as efficient,” he promised. “It’s enough to see what is happening to airlines around the world to understand that we have to do everything to immediately increase efficiency."
