During a speech to inaugurate a pedestrian tunnel under the runway at Haifa Airport, Minister of Transport, Yisrael Katz said that he was working with the Prime Minister on the issue of Israeli airlines overflying Saudi Arabia.
Among those participating at a ceremony held at the airport in Haifa were the new director general of the Ministry of Transport, Yaakov Ganot; chairman of the board of the Israel Airports Authority, Eli Ovadia; director general of the Israel Airports Authority, Kobi Mor and other guests. Within the framework of the project, the Airports Authority constructed an 80 meter long pedestrian tunnel under the runway, in order to allow pedestrians to cross from one side of the airport to the army base on the other side.
The Israel Aviation Authority decided to finance the project at a cost of about 5 million shekels. “This project is an important additional stage in the project to promote aviation safety,” declared Minister Katz.
During his speech, the minister revealed that his office was working to connect outlying towns to the center of the country and promised that in the near future his office would meet with all professional bodies involved in order to reach a decision regarding the location of the next airport in Israel.
“Additionally, I am working in conjunction with the Prime Minister on the issue of Israeli airlines flying over Saudi Arabian airspace, something that will shorten the flight time to the Far East, reduce prices and will and will transform Israel into a crossroads,” added Katz.
