9% fewer passengers expected at Ben Gurion Airport this summer

Based on data from the Israel Airports Authority about 2.3 million passengers are expected to pass through Ben Gurion Airport this summer, a reduction of 9 percent on last year. During the first few days of July, 178,000 passengers are expected to pass though Ben Gurion Airport on 1,200 passenger flights.

Despite the dramatic slump in the numbers traveling to Turkey, it is still expected to be one of the leading destinations for Israelis this summer.  According to data from the Israel Airports Authority, 1,684 passenger flights are expected to depart from Ben Gurion Airport for Turkey during July and August with about 154,000 passengers, a reduction of 27 percent on the corresponding months last year.

Other destinations expected to be popular with Israeli travelers are the United States with 292,500 passengers on 1,017 flights and destinations in Western Europe such as Germany, Italy, France and Great Britain.  The Israel Airports Authority have indicated that during the peak days of the summer, more than 50,000 passengers are expected to pass through Ben Gurion Airport daily on approximately 300 flights.

During June a 12.5 percent reduction in international passenger traffic was recorded compared to June 2008.  From the start of the year until 30th June, a total of 4.3 million passengers passed through Ben Gurion Airport, a fall of 12.8 percent on the previous year.

About 190,000 are expected to use Eilat Airport during the months of July and August on about 3,800 passenger flights.
