From the 18th June, El Al will once again be increasing their ticket prices.  A spokesperson for the company explained that the decision was taken following a further increase in the price of oil.  Amit Livni, head of marketing commented “El Al, like other world airlines has been forced to act because of the upward trend in oil prices and the forecast for this to continue in the coming months.”

With the price of oil exceeding the $70 a barrel barrier, El Al announced an increase in ticket prices, for the second time in a month.  The increase is to all destinations, with the exception of London, Central and South America, Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin.  The previous increase was between $5 and $25 for each leg of a journey.

According to the airline the additional fuel surcharge will increase ticket prices by between $10 and $40 for each leg of a journey; increasing the basic ticket price by about 5 percent.  The additional fuel surcharge for club members will be between $5 to $25 per stage, when paid for with bonus points.

On this issue El Al explained that since the beginning of 2009 they had avoided any additional fuel surcharges on tickets paid for with bonus points and had greatly reduced the prices since the large decrease in fuel prices during the winter.

The current price increase for a short range flight is an additional $10 per leg, an additional $20 on medium range flights and $40 on long haul flights.  Amit Livni, head of marketing at El Al said that until recently, despite the continuous increase in the price of crude oil, El Al had avoided increasing ticket prices.

Livni explained “El Al, like all of the world’s airlines, has been forced to react on the oil price increases and the forecast for this trend to continue for the coming months.”

El Al will also be launching a new sales offer designed for their Matmid club members, allowing them to purchase cheap airline tickets for the autumn and winter seasons.  This offer is subject to them purchasing a pair of airline tickets during the summer season.  This offer is valid for the first 100 tickets at the special discounted price.
