May 2009: International traffic slumps 15 percent

Data released by the Israel Airports Authority showed that international passenger traffic for May stood at 814,023, a fall of 15 percent compared to the same period last year.  A reduction of one third in traffic to Turkey accounted for a significant part of this fall. Since the start of the year there has been a fall of 13 percent in the volume of passenger traffic.

According to data released by the Israel Airports Authority, during May there was a fall of 12 percent in passenger traffic traveling on Israeli airlines.  Opposed to this there was an increase of 21 percent in the volume of passengers on internal and regional flights.

El Al recorded a fall of 12 percent compared to the corresponding month last year; while El Al’s subsidiary airline, Sun d’Or recorded a 17 percent increase in passenger traffic.  Bmi, the British airline, which increased its number of flights to two daily, at the beginning of May, recorded a significant increase in passenger traffic.  The main destination for arrivals and departures was London Heathrow, which totaled 58,380 passengers in May, an increase of 9.5 percent compared with the previous May.

Among the European airlines, Czech airline, CSA recorded the largest increase in passenger traffic. British Airways, Alitalia, Swiss, Brussels Airlines and Malev all reported negative figures compared to the previous May, while Lufthansa recorded a fall of 6 percent.   The country recording the largest volume of passenger activity was the United States, with 108,799 passengers during May.  This figure constituted 13.4 percent of all passenger traffic.

The American airlines, Continental and Delta both recorded minimal falls in passenger traffic.
