Dead Sea hotels in danger of having to close

The Minister of Tourism held a meeting with the Tamar regional council, accompanied by director general of the Dead Sea Hotels Association, Udi Zicherman and project manager of the Dead Sea Works, Noam Goldstein.  Minister Misezhnikov said that the intention was to help make the region a leading tourism destination.

Misezhnikov said “I see it as the highest priority to develop this region and to find solutions to prevent flooding that threatens the hotels at the southern end of the Dead Sea.”

At the opening of the meeting, Dov Litvinoff head of the municipality for the Tamar Regional Council told Minister Misezhnikov about the current problems in the Dead Sea region.  According to him, the Treasury had decided to destroy tourism in the region and that hotels would be unable to deal with the Treasury’s latest proposals; adding that there is a high risk that the hotels would be abandoned or forced to close.

The issue of flooding that threatens the hotels at the southern end of the Dead Sea was discussed.  Noam Goldstein, project manager for the Dead Sea Works said that the factories had in the past invested some $300 million in a partial solution of the problem and were investing funds for a future solution.

Goldstein said “the level of the southern end of the Dead Sea is rising by about 20 centimeters each year and if we don’t find an immediate solution there is a real danger that the Moriah hotel will have to close.  If we can’t find a solution by the end of next year then it is possible that another 5 hotels will be in danger of shutting down.”
