Air Berlin to fly to Israel

Germany’s second largest airline, Air Berlin has announced that it will be starting a scheduled service to Israel from July.  The flight is to depart Berlin every Tuesday and Thursday with the return flight from Ben Gurion Airport every Wednesday and Friday.

From the 7th July Air Berlin will start operating direct flights from Berlin to Tel Aviv on aircraft type Boeing 737-800.  Air Berlin already flies to 127 destinations in Europe.  The proposed price to Tel Aviv will be 99 Euros.

Air Berlin, the second largest airline in Germany operates flights out of Berlin Teigel airport will compete with El Al who already operate 5 weekly flights and with Lufthansa who operate flights to other locations in Germany.  Other airlines operating on the routes to Israel are Israir and Sun d’Or as well as German company TUI and charter company Hamburg International.

Air Berlin recorded pre-tax profits of 14.2 million Euros in 2008 and have recently signed an agreement with the TUI group for the operation of long distance flights.
