Nazareth prepares for the Pope’s visit
 
Ramiz Jaraisy Mayor of Nazareth told a press conference organized by the Ministry of Tourism that the Treasury are still arguing over the budget for the Papal visit, even though the trip is less than six weeks away. Despite this Jaraisy, in conjunction with the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemet LeYisrael) said that construction and renovation work was well advanced.

Masada the most popular tourist site in Israel
 
Data released by Dun & Bradstreet’s annual ‘Duns 100’ shows that the most popular tourist and leisure site in Israel during 2008 was the Masada National Park with a total of 721,915 visitors. This was an increase of 16.5 percent on 2007.

Will Ben Gurion Airport open to night time departures?
 
Eli Ovadia, Chairman of the Israel Airports Authority (IAA) and Kobi Mor, the director general of the IAA met at Ben Gurion Airport with a panel of representatives from the foreign airlines in order to understand the extent of the damage caused by existing policies.

Director General of Ministry of Transport resigns
 
Gideon Sitterman, Director General of the Ministry of Transport informed the new Minister of Transport, Yisrael Katz of his decision to quit his post after three years of service. Sitterman will remain in charge until a permanent replacement has been appointed.

El Al want to fly to Eilat
 
El Al chief Haim Romano has approached Giora Rom of the Civil Aviation Authority, requesting that El Al be designated as the leading carrier on regional flights, with the intention of allowing El Al to fly 6 to 12 daily flights on the route Ben Gurion Airport to Eilat/Ovda and Sde Dov to Eilat/Ovda to compete with Israir and Arkia

Optimism over choice of new Tourism minister
 
Senior members of the tourism industry in Israel expressed their satisfaction and optimism over the appointment of Stas Misezhnikov as the new Minister of Tourism. Ami Etgar, the General Manager of the Israel Incoming Tour Operators Association (IITOA) said that he hoped that Minister Misezhnikov would this year manage to bring tourism levels back to the same as in 2008.
